What is happening during the Liturgy?
It’s important to mention here that the Liturgy has a terrain—with peaks and valleys—while still having wholeness. There are specific moments that have extraordinary significance for a Christian. The first, as we’ve already mentioned, is the gathering of the faithful who demonstrate that they are the Church.

The second is that this gathering of faithful listens to God’s Word. I want to stress that we’re living in an age of information where we expect a ceaseless input of news. The Bible readings during Liturgy have a different goal; not to provide new information but rather a goal of building a relationship and communication.

When we hear a Gospel story about something that Christ did or said, it’s not that we hear news. Instead, we recognize God more deeply; we see anew and recognize God acting in our life. I love the expression “Hearing the Gospel during Liturgy is our meeting with Christ in His Word.”

The third moment is the offering of the Holy Gifts. For many centuries people coming to Liturgy brought prosphora, breads, wine as gifts that were brought to the altar and consecrated. Unfortunately, this custom is lost and the priest alone prepares the gifts of bread and wine during the Proskomydia at the beginning of the Liturgy without us seeing it. But we must not lose awareness of this priestly action because the meaning remains: we bring our very selves, and the priest offers our gift to the altar during the Cherubicon and to be consecrated and transformed during the Anaphora (Take; Eat . . . )

Тут важливо сказати, що Літургія має свій рельєф – кульмінації, спади, хоч вона є єдиним
цілим. Є певні моменти, які мають дуже важливе значення в житті християнина. Перший момент ми вже згадали – це зібрання вірних, які свідчать, що є Церквою.

Другий важливий момент – це те, що зібрання вірних слухає Боже Слово. Я би хотів тут
підкреслити, що ми живемо в інформаційному суспільстві, де дуже сильний наголос ставимо на тому, що треба черпати нову інформацію. Біблійні читання під час Літургії мають інший вимір – не інформаційний, а вимір стосунку, спілкування.

Слухаючи якусь євангельську історію про те, що Христос зробив чи сказав, ми не просто щось нове дізнаємося, а глибше пізнаємо Бога, відкриваємо Його по-новому і усвідомлюємо Його дію в нашому житті. Мені дуже подобаються слова, що читання і слухання Євангелія на Літургії – це наша зустріч з Христом у Його Слові.

Третій момент – принесення Святих Дарів. Протягом багатьох століть було так, що люди, які
приходили на Літургію, самі несли просфору, хліби, вино – як дари, які пізніше мали бути принесені на престіл і освячені. На жаль, ця практика зараз зникла, бо священик сам готує дари – хліб і вино – ще на початку Літургії під час Проскомидії, і ми цього навіть не бачимо. Але в нас не має пропасти свідомість цього священнодійства, бо його зміст не змінився – це ми приносимо Господу все, що маємо, приносимо себе самих, а священик “заносить” наші приношення на престіл під час Херувимської пісні, “кладе” перед Богом і під час Анафори (“Прийдіть, їжте…”) вони освячуються, перемінюються.
