The hieromartyr Nykyta Budka was born on June 7, 1877 in the village of Dobromirka in the region of Zbarazh.

After finishing elementary school in his village he entered the Ternopil classic gymnasium (secondary school) which he completed with honours in 1897. He did a year of compulsory military service after graduation. He studied theology in Vienna and Innsbruck and upon completion in 1905 he was ordained to the priesthood by Metropolitan Andryj Sheptytsky.

In his pastoral work he paid particular attention to the needs of Ukrainian emigrés. In July 1912 he was appointed by Rome as the first bishop for Ukrainians in Canada. He was consecrated bishop on October 14, 1912 (feast of the Protection of the Mother of God).

When he arrived in Canada in December, 1912 there were 17 priests serving Ukrainian settlers spread from Western Alberta to Southern Ontario. In 1914 he convened the first synod of the Church in Canada at which many practical matters were discussed and solutions proposed. The decisions were compiled in the first “Church Regulations” for Canada.

In spite of very serious challenges Bishop Budka made tremendous strides forward for our people and the Church in Canada. As a result of his ongoing health problems, he returned to Lviv in 1928 where he became the Vicar General of the metropolia of Lviv.

Along with all the other bishops and thousands of priests and lay people, on April 11, 1945 Bishop Budka was arrested by the Soviet authorities. During questioning Bishop Budka was beaten, tortured, and starved. He was convicted to eight years of hard labour and exiled to Karalaha concentration camp in Kazakhstan.

In the camp he was forced to do very physically difficult jobs, in spite of his ill health. On October 1, 1949 Bishop Nykyta Budka died. The Soviet authorities did not want his burial site to become a place of devotion and so they ordered his body thrown out on the taiga to be devoured by animals.

On June 7, 2001 St. John Paul II beatified Bishop Budka.

Священномученик Кир Никита Будка народився 7 червня 1877 року в селі Добромірка Збаразького району в селянській сім’ї. Початкову освіту здобув у родинному селі, після чого розпочав навчання у Тернопільській класичній гімназії.

У 1897 році закінчив її з відзнакою. Після цього відбував військову службу протягом року.1905 року після закінчення богословських студій у Відні та Інсбруці, отримав священичі свячення з рук Митрополита Андрея Шептицького. Від самого початку велику увагу приділяв душ пастирській опіці українських емігрантів. У липні 1912р. був призначений Апостольською Столицею Єпископом для українців-католиків у Канаді.

Єпископська хіротонія відбулася 14 жовтня 1912р. В той час в Канаді вже було 17 священиків, які обслуговували коло сто церковних станиць, розкинених сотні кілометрів одна від одної. В 1914 р. він скликав перший синод, на якому прийнято основні рішення щодо управи і праці в Церкві. Ті рішення було видано окремою книгою під назвою “Правила Церкви”. Незважаючи на поважні труднощі заслуги єпископа Будки в розбудові церковного і громадського життя українців в Канаді дуже великі.

Задля слабого здоровля в 1928р. повертається до Львова і стає генеральним вікарієм митрополичої архієпархії. 11 квітня 1945 року Кир Никита Будка був ув’язнений разом з іншими владиками УГКЦ: Митрополитом Йосифом Сліпим, єпископами, Хомишиним, Чарнецьким i Латишивським. В ході слідства з боку слідчих Н.Будка зазнав неймовірних тортур, мордувань, знущань і голодувань. Був засуджений на 8 років позбавлення волі й засланий до Каралагу – концтабору з особливим режимом в степах Казахстану, біля Караганди.

В концтаборі виконував важку фізичну роботу. Кир Никита Будка помер 1 жовтня 1949 рок. Його тлінні останки викино на сибірську тайгу!

7 червня 2001р. був беатифікований святим Папою Іваном Павлом ІІ.
