The desire for an autonomous Orthodox Church resurfaces in the national revival of the early twentieth century.

On May 5, 1920 a group of Orthodox Ukrainians in Kyiv proclaim the creation of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The Church is destroyed by the Soviet government in 1921 and survives only in the West.

The only Orthodox Church allowed to function by the Soviets in Ukraine from 1921 until 1989 is the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Interestingly, the Ukrainian Exarchate of the ROC constituted the numerically and financially most significant part of that Church!

The end of the Soviet Union allowed for the re-birth of the Autocephalous Church in Ukraine and then, as a result of unfortunate internal conflicts, its division and the creation of a second Church: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyivan Patriarchate).

However, today none of the autonomous Ukrainian Orthodox churches are canonically recognized by other Orthodox Churches. Current discussions with the Patriarch of Constantinople and the formal restoration of Constantinople’s exercise of its “maternal care and jurisdiction” over Ukrainian Orthodoxy would establish a united Orthodox Church in Ukraine, recognized as such by the most senior authority in Orthodoxy.

Прагнення за відновлення історичної автономії разом із національним відродженням в перших декадах 20-го століття спричинює створення Українскьої Автокефальної Православної Церкви 5-го травня, 1920 р. Церква немала часу розвинутися бо в 1921 р. радянська влада жорстоко її репресувало. Одинока православна церква дозволена існувати в Укр. РСР це Російська Православн Церква (РПЦ).

Український Екзархат встановляло найбільшою частиною РПЦ і віряни в Україні були найбільш фінансово щирі для церкви! Розвал Радянського Союзу спричинило відродження Української Автокефальної Православної Церкви, а опісля (внаслідок шкідливих непорозумінь) створення Української Православної Церкви (Київський Патріярхат).

Однак ані одна з цих церков не є канонічною (визнаною іншою православною церквою). Нинішні переговори з царгородським патріярхом мають за ціль поєднати українців православних та вибороти їхнє визнання найвищим авторитетом в православнім світі, цебто царгородською церквою.
