Matins, the service of the morning, is the prayer of thanks to God for the new day and the beautiful world in which we find ourselves and through which we can come to know God more fully.

Matins is chiefly made up of psalmody and the “canon”. The canon is a series of verses organized into 9 Odes, which refer either to the day of the week, the saint of the day or to the wonder of God’s creation transfigured in the light of His resurrection.

A moving moment in the service is found during the 9th Ode with the singing of the Magnificat: My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my saviour …

If it happens to be a feastday then during Matins, in addition to an Old Testament reading we also have a Gospel reading and the Exaltations (Velychannya) of the feast.

In monastic practice, the day is organized around the “Hours” which are sung four times. In monasteries, the 1st Hour would be sung immediately after Matins; the 3rd Hour at 9 a.m.; the 6th Hour at noon; and the 9th Hour at 3 p.m. It is not common for the Hours to be sung in parish churches, although this often does happen on special days, in particular on the Eves of the Nativity and Theophany and on Good Friday.

The Hours are brief services involving psalmody and prayers reminding us of God’s constant presence in our lives.

We conclude our reflection on the liturgical cycle and recognize how it continually calls us into the fundamental truth of our faith: Christ is Risen and when we live this Resurrection we recognize that God is always with us – in us and around us!

Рання відправа (Утреня) це нагода прославляти Господа за новий день, за Божий світ котрий вітає нас та дає нам пізнати Господнє бажання щоби ми Бога пізнали не тільки один в одного, але у цілому світі! Утреня головно складається із псалмів та канону.

Канон це серія тропарців зорганізовані в 9-ох піснях, котрі відносяться або до самого дня (тижня чи святого) чи до світлости Божого сотворіння переображене Воскресінням.

Зворушлива частина дев’ятої пісні канону є спів пісні Богородиці (Маґніфікат):
Величає душа моя Господа і возрадувався дух мій у Бозі спасі моїм …

У більші свята підчас Утрені в додатки до Старо Завітних читань є читання Святої Євангелії та Величання (в честь свята).

В монастирях день зорганізований довкруг т.зв. Часів котрі співаютья чотири рази в день. В монастирях 1-ий час співається після Утрені; 3-ий час о коло 9-ої рано; 6-ий час в полудне; а 9-ий час в 15:00 год. В парафіях де не де далі співаються Часи але це головно відбувається в особливі дні: Навечеря Різдва і Богоявлення та на Велику П’ятницю.

Часи є короткі відправи котрі складаються з псалмів та молитов щоби пригадати нам про стійкість Божої присутності в нашім житті.

Кінчаємо наші розважання про літургічний цикл та як воно постійно закликає нас переживати основну правду нашої віри: Христос Воскрес і коли ми живемо цим Воскресінням ми пізнаємо, що Господь Бог є завжди з нами – в нас і довкруг нас!
