St Nicholas’s spin-off, Santa Claus, has become an emblem of Christmas, but very specifically, not the Christmas of Christ’s birth, but the Christmas of consumerism that has capitalized on a “spirit” of fun, generosity, family, and love; yet geared specifically at children, requiring all children to receive a gift—a toy. The requirement has developed into a culture of request (letters to Santa) and expectation, even entitlement. Parents stress about costs associated with the latest trendy gadget promoted as a must-have.

On the other hand, gift giving can carry so much goodness! It seems to me that remembering St. Nicholas, the 4th c Middle Eastern Bishop, can help us to celebrate the magic and delight of Christmas despite or perhaps together with the commercial glare.

People have made St Nicholas such a wildly popular figure the world over perhaps because of the way his life exemplifies a unity of heaven and earth. Like God becoming human in Christ, we see a mind boggling reality in the bishop of Myra—a man being like God. How so? Not by wielding power and status and lusting for more, (which is commonly human) but by noticing total strangers in need and secretly helping them (human and God like).

The gifts of St. Nick were given in total generosity, unsolicited. The stories of his selfless caring illuminate for us, the wonder of God becoming human—poor, vulnerable, utterly dependant on the caring and kindness of others. This St Nicholas Day, let’s recognize him among us; let’s feel the wonder and magic of heaven and earth; let’s be St Nicholas.

Хоч багато кажуть, що Santa Claus це тільки сучасний св. Миколай, справді є велика різниця між поняттям котре панує в нашому суспільству, а саме що Різдво це час коли діти випрошують собі дарунки. Навіть можна сказати, що нині декотрі вимагають собі дарунки. Натомість обдарування котре приходить від оповідань про св. Миколая це щось значно інакше.

Пізнавши цього святця Церкви та щирість і любов котрі відзеркалені в його життю легко зрозуміти чому це свято немов наповняє нас духом надходящих Різдвяних Свят.

Святий Миколай це втілення Божої любови та дбайливости в особі смиренного єпископа з 4-го століття в сучасні Туреччині. Це є той котрий дбайливо опікувався сиротами без того щоби навіть знали про його щедрість. Це є той котрий обороняв найбільшу правду нашої віри, що Бог став людиною! Це той котрий свідчить поєднання земного з небесним!

Пізнавши правдивого св.отця Миколая ми входимо в таїнство Божого воплочення котре нас вчить про велич Божої любови та про нашу можливість бути відзеркаленням Божої присутности в нашім світі.

Приклад св. Миколая вчить нас про те, що найвищий вияв нашої правдивої людяности не лежить в земнім багатстві чи славі але в дбайливості за один одного, пізнавати і шанувати потреби кожної людини котру стрічаємо. Приклад самовідданости св. Миколая є прикладом як ми маємо ставитись до бідних, вразливих, до тих про котрих всі забувають. В цей день св. Миколая відкриймося до його присутности між нами, відчуваймо красу Божої ласки між нами, будьмо св. Миколай.
