The following is from an interview with Fr. Oleh Kindiy, Professor at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv

People who attend Church don’t always consider themselves a part of a community. It’s easier for them to think of the Church as the priest or choir, ie: something beyond themselves. Doesn’t this remove personal responsibility?

I often ask people what percentage of the Church is made up by the clergy: priests, monks, bishops etc. The answer is between 30-50%, suggesting that lay people are only a segment of the Church that is primarily constituted by clergy. They are surprised when I tell them that clergy make up less than 1% of the Church. Lay people do not realize that they are the majority; they expect the priest to do everything: gather people and assign jobs for each to accomplish.

In this case it’s important for us to understand that we are all God’s children, that there is a place for every person in the Church; everyone has something to offer the Church and not just to get something from it.

The most important thing for us to know is that the Church, from a theological point of view, is an icon of the Kingdom of God: a place of immense joy, inspiration, and possibility. In Church we breathe the breath of the future. The priest during Liturgy raises the Lamb of God and announces: “Holy things for the holy”. This means that everyone in the church is already holy.

The Lord sees us from the perspective of the future. But many have missed this deeper understanding of the Church.

Люди, які ходять до храму, не завжди вважають себе частиною Церкви як спільноти. Їм легше думати, що Церква – це священик чи хор, тобто щось поза ними. Чи це не є зняттям власної відповідальності?

Я іноді запитую людей, скільки відсотків у Церкві займають клірики, тобто священики, монахи, єпископи та інші. Відповіді звучать переважно 30-50%, тобто людям здається, що духовенства в Церкві дуже багато, а мирян є лише частиною, яка їх доповнює. І коли я кажу, що кліриків у Церкві є менше 1%, вони дивуються.

Тобто миряни не усвідомлюють, що вони є більшістю. Вони часто очікують, що все має зробити священик: всіх зібрати, роздати всім завдання, а вони будуть лише їх виконувати. І в цьому випадку треба зрозуміти, що ми всі – діти Божі, що запропонувати Церкві, а не лише взяти від неї. Але найважливіше – донести до людини, що Церква, з богословського погляду, – це ікона Царства Божого, це місце величезної радости, натхнення і можливостей. У Церкві людина дихає повітрям майбутнього. Священик на Літургії піднімає Агнець Божий і виголошує: “Cвятеє
святим”.

Тобто всі, хто в Церкві, вже святі. Господь дивиться на нас із перспективи
майбутнього. Але багато людей не мають такого глибинного розуміння Церкви.*
