Why should we attend Divine Liturgy?

When people gather together for Liturgy, participate in it, receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ—they
become the Body of Christ—the Church. Thanks to the Liturgy we can understand that the Church isn’t a religious organization, a system of opinions or a creed. It is the body of Christ, a collective of people united by communion in Christ and through Christ.

That’s why participating in the Divine Liturgy exceeds private prayer and even collective prayer. Because prayer is turning to God to express our feelings either of petition or penitence. However, in the Liturgy, something exceptional occurs in answer to Christ’s invitation: “Take, eat, this my Body.” We eat and become a
part of Christ: this is the tangible dimension that no other prayer has.

People often say, “I came to church to pray.” Correct. But it is significantly more important to say, “We have gathered together at church for the Liturgy.” This gathering can’t be substituted with anything else because, by coming together in a church, we demonstrate that we are Church; we are brought together by God. I am not the only person who believes in God; there are others and Christ calls us together as Church.

We each contribute our portion to create the general prayer of the Church.

Коли люди збираються на Службу, беруть у ній участь, причащаються Тілом і Кров’ю Ісуса Христа – вони стають Тілом Христовим, тобто Церквою. Завдяку Літургії можна зрозуміти, що ЦЕРКВА – ЦЕ НЕ ЯКАСЬ РЕЛІГІЙНА ОРГАНІЗАЦІЯ, СИСТЕМА ПОГЛЯДІВ, ВІРОВЧЕННЯ. ЦЕ ТІЛО ХРИСТОВЕ, ЗБІР ЛЮДЕЙ, ОБ’ЄДНАНИХ ЧЕРЕЗ ПРИЧАСТЯ У ХРИСТІ І ЗАВДЯКИ ХРИСТУ.

Тому участь у Божественній Літургії перевершує молитву особисту і навіть колективну. Бо молитва – це просто звернення до Бога, вираження якихось почуттів перед Ним, прохань чи покаяння. Але в Літургії здійснюється щось особливе у відповідь на запрошення Христа. “Прийміть, їжте, це є Тіло Моє”. Ми Його споживаємо і стаємо частиною Христа, тут є цей матеріяльний вимір, якого не має жодна інша молитва. Часто люди кажуть: я прийшов до церкви помолитися. Так, правильно. Але значно важливіше сказати, що ЦЕ МИ ЗІБРАЛИСЯ в храмі на Літургію. І це зібрання також не можна чимось замінити, бо коли ми збираємося в храмі, тим демонструємо, що ми є Церква, що нас Бог зібрав, що я не один, який вірю в Бога, що є ще хтось та нас усіх Христос збирає як Церкву.

І кожен вносить свою лепту в загальну молитву Церкви.
