The Patriarch is coming!

Christianity developed in different ways in various parts of the world. Perhaps the most significant differentiation within Christianity is the one that arose between the countries of Western Europe and the Christians of Greece, the Middle East, Egypt, Ethiopia, Asia and most of the Slavic countries.

The simple way these two parts of Christianity are designated is with the terms Western and Eastern Christianity. Western Christianity today includes the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, and the Protestant/Reform Churches. Eastern Christianity refers to the Christians whose origins lie in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Basin and farther East and South. Our Church is an Eastern Christian Church in union with Rome; we are one of 23 Eastern Catholic Churches. The fact that there are 23 Eastern Catholic Churches and only one Roman (or Latin) Catholic Church demonstrates the different ways Christianity developed.

In the West, by the 8^th century Rome had gained pre-eminence over the other major Christian centres in Western Europe. This is why today the Pope has, what we call universal jurisdiction and so appoints all the bishops for the Roman Catholics. However, the East was different.

Recall that the first community of disciples was in Jerusalem. We also know that there was a Christian community very early on in Antioch (Syria), Alexandria (Egypt) and elsewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean. When the Roman Emperor Constantine moved his capital from Rome to Constantinople (Constantine’s city) he called it New Rome and it became a very important Christian centre. No one city dominated the Christian Church in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean, and so each major city developed its own traditions in accord with local customs.

Thus arose the various Eastern Churches. As a sign of the significance of the major cities (Antioch, Alexandria, Constantinople, and Jerusalem) the head of the Church there was called Patriarch. Over the centuries, as other Churches became important, their heads also took the title Patriarch.

As a Patriarchal Church we have our own bishops elected by our Synod, and we continue our own liturgical customs, theology, and Church structure.

As we welcome Patriarch Svyatoslav, we celebrate and honour all those who went before us developing and preserving our unique, Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church!

В цьому році, Божого милосердя, маємо надзвичайну нагоду подякувати Господеві за несподівані ласки котрих Він на нас засилає. В 1916 році маленька група нових імігрантів з Україні майже непомітно зійшлися з о. Филимою і розпочали історію нашої парафії! За десять років ця громада котра ще без пароха, але вже трошки більш заможна будує свій храм і запрошує першого українського єпископа в Канаді, Кир Никиту Будку, приїхати з Вінніпегу щоби освятити храм! Вже 90 років цей наш храм стоїть на розі вулиць Вікторія і Майкел. Через ті 90 років відвідали наш храм Владика Василій Ладика (другий єпископ в Канаді), довголітний єпарх Кир Ізидор Борецький та в 1976 році св. п. Блаженніший Патріярх Йосиф. А тепер з нагоди цього-річних ювілеїв з нами буде святкувати Блаженніший Патріярх Святослав!

Ми радіємо що глава нашої Церкви буде тут знами. Патріярх це історичний титул для голови одної із Східніх церков і це означає що хоч ми визнаємо зверхність папи Римського, наша Церква має свою історію, традицію, та властиву форму само-урядування. Ми є сестра-Церква з іншими католицькими Церквами а в тому числі і римо-католицькою церквою. Західна, цебто римо-католицька церква є одностайною і тому єпископ Риму є її глава та назначує її єпископів по цілім світі. Натомість є 23 східних католицьких церков – кожна з них має свій устрій, звичаї та ієрархію. З присутністю нашого Патріярха на наших святкуваннях ми не тільки єднаємося з цілою нашою церквою, але через нього ми єднаємося з усіма католицькими церквами!
